Meet Jim: Our Irrigation Technician

While scheduling irrigation turn-ons, repairs, and blowouts this year, the office staff noticed an encouraging pattern. While it can sometimes be tricky for our customers to find a window of free space in their busy schedules for an irrigation appointment, one thing seems to be a consistent certainty, and it’s their excitement to see Jim again! For this week’s blog post, we thought it would be interesting to hear from the other side of this dynamic, so we interviewed the South Shore’s favorite irrigation technician.

What do you like most about your work?
I enjoy seeing the regular customers every season, especially after a long winter when we’re all looking forward to warm weather.

How long have you been working at J. Michael?
I’ve been working here for 5 years, and I love it here. These people are my friends.

What attracted you to working on irrigation systems?
I had done a lot of work in the past with plumbing and wiring, so when the opportunity came up to get into irrigation work, I knew it would be a good fit.

Sometimes you have to climb under houses or encounter other challenging situations! Have you ever been overwhelmed by your working environment?
Every day I get dirty at work, but that’s fine with me. I love a challenge. And Mike always supports us when we have to stay late on a job to do the right thing. I really like that about working here.

What would you say is the most memorable experience you’ve had while working?
To be honest, I have enjoyed witnessing the beautiful artistry of the hardscape work Keith does here. His masonry skills are impressive. He’s definitely talented in his craft.

What do you like to do in your free time?
I metal detect for colonial relics!

Is there a question you get most often from customers?
Why are you still doing this! You’re so old! ….

I’ve also noticed that sometimes homeowners who are new to having an irrigation system understandably don’t realize that a sprinkler system needs to be well maintained and properly opened and closed each season. It’s always nice when a customer is home during their appointment, because often times they’re curious about my work.  I enjoy explaining what I do, talking about what repairs are needed on their system, and why it’s imperative to schedule winterization to be performed by a professional.

Is there anything you look forward to at work?
Every year, I look forward to the Christmas party! I was actually just telling one of the new office staff members about the fun we have at this event. It’s always refreshing to enjoy each other’s company outside of the work environment, and to learn more about the people we see almost every day.
