By July, most gardens across the South Shore have settled into their summer rhythm. Perennials are blooming, shrubs have filled out, and lawns have reached their peak. It’s also the time when weeds seem to grow overnight, mulch begins to thin, and garden beds can quickly lose the crisp appearance they had in spring.
The good news is that a few simple maintenance tasks can keep your landscape healthy, attractive, and easier to care for through the remainder of the season.
One of the most important jobs is staying ahead of weeds. Removing them while they’re still young prevents them from spreading seeds throughout your beds and competing with your ornamental plants for valuable moisture and nutrients. Hand-pulling after a summer rain or watering makes the job much easier, especially before weeds become well established.
Mulch also deserves a mid-season inspection. A two- to three-inch layer helps retain soil moisture, suppress weeds, and keep plant roots cooler during periods of summer heat. If mulch has thinned or washed away, a light touch-up can make garden beds look refreshed while continuing to provide these important benefits. Be careful not to pile mulch against the trunks of trees or the crowns of shrubs, as this can trap moisture and lead to disease or insect problems.
Summer is also an excellent time to check your shrubs and perennials for signs of stress. Remove spent blooms where appropriate to encourage additional flowering, trim away damaged or diseased branches, and keep an eye out for early signs of insect or disease activity. Healthy plants are far more resilient when they receive consistent watering and routine attention throughout the growing season.
Finally, step back and look at your landscape as a whole. Have plants outgrown their space? Are there gaps where spring annuals have faded? Could a new grouping of shrubs, ornamental grasses, or flowering perennials add fresh color and texture? Mid-summer often reveals opportunities to enhance your landscape before fall planting season arrives.
